Office DevCon 2006

Ok.. whew...2 days down and one to go.  I don't know where to start.. and where to stop.  Sure, I've had the beta for a while, and install and looked at different pieces. I went to the Ascend training, about a month ago and was blown away, but the information from DevCon has been incredible.

I must say, I feel a little like Dorothy in Oz.  Features, Workflow and Content Types oh my.  There are SO many new things coming out in this next version of SharePoint, and the possibilities are limitless, from the Business Data Catalog to some complex Workflows, to what they are calling "No-Code" solutions with SharePoint Designer (FrontPage).

I must say the experts are incredibly helpful and informative, I have enjoyed talks by Mike Fitzmaurice, Mike Ammerlaan and Brian Jones.   Plus, when I have caught them at lunch or in the halls, they have been so helpful and willing to answer questions.

I enjoyed Mike Morton's email and tracking session, the ability to truly leverage email in SharePoint, I am hoping gets people over the jump of using it day to day.

The SharePoint technologies, tips and tools session was great, I'm incredibly excited about Visual Studio Extensions for SharePoint Services.  I do have some VS 2005 templates already available for a Web Part, and I will build one for a feature as well.  I will try to put them up in the next week or so.

With all this great information and possibilty, it is leads to the question of where to use which style of solving the problem.  To send an email, after a list item has been completed, do you define a simple WorkFlow with SPDesigner, or create a feature to enable an event on the list, or do you use distribution lists with in the SharePoint list.  There are so many possibilities, I'm excited to figure out which one will apply to which solution.

I'm looking forward to the final day and cutting my teeth on the BDC.. I think it may be one of the biggest additions to WSS 2007.  I can't wait..
